Memorial Day is a big day around here

“Memorial Day is a big day around here,” said Milly, as we were looking at the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial outside the main gate of Ft. Carson, Colorado. Milly was giving me and Ray Schmautz a tour of Ft. Carson.  One by one, she pointed to many of the names on the memorial, telling us about some of the families she knows.

Milly and her husband, Aaron, were involved in our Victory Ranch ministry when they were stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC.  Milly told me that their plan was to join Cadence after Aaron retired from the Army in a few years.  However, a month after moving to Ft. Carson, Aaron suddenly died from a stroke, leaving Milly and her three children in grief.

As the Lord continues to work in Milly, He’s powerfully working through her.  She co-founded a non-profit organization to help support and encourage the families of fallen soldiers called Colorado Military Survivors.  She helps connect those suffering with loss and helps train people involved with the care of the survivors, including the Army’s Casualty Notification Officers.

Ray Schmautz is one of our newest Cadence missionaries.  Ray & Jan have been assigned to open a new Hospitality House ministry at Ft. Carson, where the needs are great.  As we drove around post, I was amazed at the number of new barracks and buildings springing up as they prepare to become the new HQ for the 4th Infantry Division.  Please pray for the support of chaplains, the local community, and people like Milly to help launch this new ministry.

Ray was so excited to be on post.  We ate lunch at Burger King in the food court surrounded by army personnel in uniform, and I could clearly see the anticipation, love, and desire to minister in this community on Ray’s face.
